Hibernation in bears is a concept that’s easily grasped, but studying the lesser-known physiological changes that take place before denning may offer new insights into sleep. Wildlife biologist Wes Larson uses technology to study bears to ensure they stay healthy and hibernate successfully while simultaneously learning about the quality of his own sleep from his Sleep Number 360 smart bed. Larson breaks down the basics of heart rate variability, or HRV, and what it can mean for quality sleep—whether that sleep is all winter long, or overnight.
